How to Create Characters in MUTERRA
Creating characters in MUTERRA is not a random artistic process — it is a structured act of world-building.
Each hero is a vessel of meaning: their story, motives, and evolution become the foundation upon which the entire universe grows.
Every character must feel authentic, multidimensional, and alive, capable of evoking empathy or fascination in the player.
A strong character design combines narrative depth, visual identity, and emotional truth.
🎭 The Core Principle #
A character must have everything.
Just like in literature or cinema, their image is not limited to appearance — it includes psychology, relationships, worldview, and inner contradictions.
We don’t just draw faces.
We create personalities that could shape cultures, influence factions, and give rise to entire worlds.
🧩 Building Blocks of a Character #
Each MUTERRA character should be constructed from the following narrative and visual components:
1. Appearance and Age #
How does the hero look?
What is their style, posture, body language, and energy? Appearance is the first message they send to the world.
2. Personality #
Revealed through actions, speech, facial expressions, habits, fears, and behavioral patterns.
Is the character introverted or extroverted? Logical or emotional? Calm or impulsive?
What are their small rituals, vices, and desires?
3. Social and Professional Status #
Who were they before the crash?
What did they do, what role did they play, and how do they adapt now?
4. Friends and Circles #
Who surrounds them?
How do they interact with others — with trust, dominance, rivalry, or detachment?
Each circle of communication reveals something about their psychology.
5. Family and Personal Life #
What emotional bonds define them?
What losses, relationships, or memories drive their current behavior?
6. Worldview #
How do they perceive morality, order, and chaos?
Are they aligned with Law or Chaos, Good or Evil, or do they remain Neutral?
See the Alignment System for reference.
This defines the ethical backbone of every action.
7. Motivation and Goal #
What drives the character?
Is it survival, revenge, faith, creation, love, or control?
Each hero must have both external goals (visible) and internal motives (hidden and emotional).
8. The Hidden Secret #
Every good character carries a hook — something the player can sense but not fully know.
It might be guilt, obsession, or a forgotten connection to the crash.
The secret keeps the audience curious.
🔄 Evolution and Character Arc #
Characters in MUTERRA change over time.
They adapt, mutate, or collapse — just like the world around them.
When creating your hero, define:
- What was their life before the crash?
- What broke them, changed them, or awakened them?
- What do they seek now — redemption, power, or transformation?
Their arc — the journey from one self to another — is the emotional spine of the MUTERRA narrative.
💬 Voice and Speech #
Every character must sound unique.
Their dialogue, tone, and rhythm reflect personality and experience.
Speech patterns can reveal background, intelligence, or even mutation type.
A single sentence should instantly tell the player who is speaking.
🧠 Behavioral Matrix #
A good exercise when designing a character:
Write out short prompts about how they react to:
- Love (trust, fear, control, detachment?)
- Conflict (fight, flee, manipulate, endure?)
- Loss (rage, denial, reflection?)
- Change (resist or adapt?)
Behavior defines realism more than visual detail.
🪞 Character Psychology Summary #
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Temperament | Introvert / Extrovert; Rational / Emotional. |
| Decision-making | Acts by reason or feeling; active or passive. |
| Habits and fears | What small traits make them human? |
| Philosophy | How do they interpret their existence in the world of mutation? |
| Hidden weakness | What breaks them emotionally or morally? |
🎬 Visual Representation #
The visual part of the character should embody their story.
Concept art, animation references, cinematic shots, or even short comics — everything should reflect personality, behavior, and psychological state.
When designing visuals:
- Ensure expression and posture match the emotion.
- Color, composition, and lighting should hint at the inner state.
- You can use animation or cutscene references to illustrate the character’s energy and rhythm.
If your concept instantly tells a story without any text — it’s successful.
⚙️ Recommended Process #
- Start with a text profile (motives, background, psychology).
- Collect visual references — examples of look, movement, and emotional tone (character reference gallery).
- Create AI or hand-drawn drafts — explore silhouette and emotion.
- Refine into final artwork that connects to the lore and setting.
- Add details that support possible in-game animation and dialogue.
🔮 Purpose of This Guide #
In MUTERRA, characters are not just assets — they are origins of the world.
From each character, new environments, factions, and storylines will grow.
That’s why we design them as if they were literary heroes, not NPCs.
The better the character is written, the more powerful the world becomes around them.
