Artifacts are the foundation of MUTERRA’s customization and tactical balance system. They replace the traditional in-game shop — there are no purchases during the match.
Every artifact is selected before the battle begins, shaping a player’s strategy, strengths, and weaknesses in advance.
Each artifact provides both positive and negative effects, allowing players to fine-tune their characters rather than simply increase power. The design goal is equilibrium, not dominance — but precision alignment with individual playstyle.
1. NFT Nature & Ownership #
| Property | Description |
|---|---|
| NFT Format | Every artifact exists as an NFT asset, tradable and verifiable on-chain. |
| Marketplace Integration | Artifacts can be traded both inside the game and on external marketplaces such as OpenSea or other compatible hubs. |
| Limited Supply | Each artifact has a finite mint count. Some are common, others extremely rare or unique. |
| Free Artifacts | Certain base artifacts can be earned or dropped for free — they don’t provide pay-to-win advantages. |
| Fair Balance | You cannot buy power or dominance. Every artifact grants both bonuses and drawbacks, forcing players to think strategically. |
| Playstyle Customization | Proper combinations allow players to adapt to specific lanes, team compositions, or known enemy tactics before each match. |
2. Slot System #
Every character has 6 active slots and, in rare cases, 1 additional universal slot.
| Slot Type | Count | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Seeds | 2 | living mechanisms, traps, parasites |
| Tech | 2 | mechanical devices, drones, augmentations |
| Mutations | 2 | internal body mods, temporary effects |
| Universal | 1 | any artifact, except Unique |
Some hero skins contain a built-in artifact occupying the universal slot — giving that skin its own tactical orientation and personality.
3. Key Properties #
- No mid-match shop. All equipment is chosen before the match; strategy adapts through loadout, not currency.
- Dual-effect design. Each artifact is a trade-off — e.g. +accuracy but −mobility, or +damage but −resistance.
- Compatibility limits. Mutation-based artifacts conflict with Tech ones; “Pure” artifacts reject biological integrations.
- Slot balance. Loadouts must mix categories; you cannot fill all slots with only one type.
- Attachment logic. Artifacts can be worn on the belt, mounted to the body, or embedded within the organism.
- Unique (Grey) artifacts. Hybrid or alien origin; they fit any slot but rarely coexist with others.
4. Artifact Categories #
| Category | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Bio-Artifacts (Seeds) | control living matter, grow symbionts | mini-farm, organic stabilizer |
| Tech Artifacts | enhance strength, accuracy, defense | drone-sight, kinetic stabilizer |
| Mutation Artifacts | alter physiology, add new instincts | vampirism, adaptive skin |
| Unique (Grey) | hybrid or alien origin; no clear type | hybrid converter, mind relay core |
5. Example Artifacts #
| Name | Type | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Forked Tongue | Mutation | restores health after kills; reduces visibility radius |
| Bio-Farm Module | Bio | periodically generates one parasite seed; consumes internal MUTA charge |
| Seed Thief Implant | Tech | steals Seeds from enemy inventory; increases detection risk |
| Seed Lock Brace | Tech | prevents seed theft; slows ability cooldowns |
| Mirror Spine | Mutation | reflects part of incoming damage; lowers armor value |
| Symbiotic Relay | Unique | boosts all active symbionts; drains stamina faster |
6. Tactical Role #
Artifacts define the functional identity of every character.
They determine how a player interacts with MUTA, Seeds, and the environment:
- set the opening tempo of the match;
- shape the team role — assault, control, or support;
- counter specific faction or mutation types;
- create synergy within factional or hybrid builds.
They replace traditional in-match economies:
strategy is defined before combat and refined through mastery, not money.
